The problem with sexual violence

Sexual violence is a major problem not only on college campuses but all over America. Sexual violence can include sexual harassment or assaults and rapes. Universities often try to ignore the fact that sexual violence occurs on their campus. Because of this, sexual violence often becomes a major issue. There are also a lot of misconceptions about sexual violence. One is that it occurs at night when you are alone and someone jumps out and attacks you. This is hardly ever the case. Another misconception is that the victim is the one at fault because of how they dressed or acted. This is never the case. 

 

 

Here are a few statistics about sexual violence

  • 1 in 5 women will be sexually assaulted during their college career

  • 1 in 16 men will be sexually assaulted during their college career

  • 95% of cases will go unreported

  • 93% of victims know the perpetrator

  • 7% of reported crimes lead an arrests

 

 

There are many symptoms victims of sexual violence can experience. And since many colleges don’t have good policy that deal with sexual violence, many victims will go without support. Without proper support these victims can have some serious problems. 

These symptoms can include

  • Poor mental health

  • Poor physical health

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Chronic pains

  • Asthma

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

  • Diabetes
